Since Mac OS X 10.7, Apple proposes to get macOS (ex-OS X) major updates from the Mac App Store, through a macOS / OS X Install application. Download, install, Mac updated. Beautiful.

But what happens if you wish to restore your Mac from scratch (with the hard drive or SSD formated)? Or if you wish to install the new OS on many Macs ? Or help a friend with a slow Internet connection? That’s when you wish you could get a good ol’ DVD to install the OS…

DiskMaker X helps to easily build a boot disk from the mac OS Install app using a USB thumb drive, an external Firewire or Thunderbolt drive, an SD-Card… If you are a Mac technician or consultant, you’ll be able to easily upgrade your customers’ machines without having to re-download the app for each Mac. Especially useful when your customer has a very slow Internet connection!

As soon as you launch the application, it tries to find a valid macOS /OS X Install app with Spotlight. Then, it proposes to create a bootable install disk on an external drive.

To build a bootable disk, you’ll need :

  • an 8 GB USB thumb key drive for macOS installers before Catalina
  • OR a 16 GB thumb drive for macOS Catalina.
  • You may also use a USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt drive or an SD-Card.
  • You can use a dedicated partition on an external drive, but be careful not to erase the full drive when using DiskMaker X!

You will also need a macOS or OS X install app. You can find a list of the macOS / OS X download installers on the Download page.

WARNING! DiskMaker X will erase the volume or the drive you chose, according to the options you chose. Don’t forget to backup your data first!
